Self-Isolation is Completed, My Waste is Neglected

The Environmental and Conservation Cluster of Filantropi Indonesia conducted an Environmental IG Live entitled “Self-Isolation is Completed, My Waste is Neglected” on Friday (25/02).  This activity was a collaborative activity between members of Filantropi Indonesia’s Environmental and Conservation Cluster, namely Belantara Foundation, Dompet Dhuafa, Greeneration, and Dompet Dhuafa Volunteer. This activity was held as a form of contribution from the Environmental and Conservation Cluster on the moment of the National Waste Care Day, commemorated on 21 February every year.

The Self-Isolation is Completed, My Waste is Neglected theme was chosen to be the topic due to an increase of Covid-19 cases, specifically the Omicron variant. Until Tuesday (15/02/2022), the official data showed that the number of Covid-19 cases in Indonesia had reached 57,049 cases. This increasing Covid-19 condition caused many people infected by Covid-19 to be obligated to conduct self-isolation (isoman).

The majority of Covid-19 survivors undergoing this self-isolation have experienced a change of habits in the aspects of food consumption and shopping habits in their daily lives. Limited access to meet merchants and enter public spaces such as minimarkets, traditional markets, supermarkets, etc, has made them engage in online transactions through e-commerce and online food delivery services. This habitual change increased waste production, especially food and goods wrappers, in their neighbourhood. If continued to be left unchecked, there will surely be many negative impacts in the future, both from the environmental and public health sides.

The IG Live activity entitled “Self-Isolation is Completed, My Waste is Neglected” was one of the series of environmental campaign events that was conducted by Filantropi Indonesia’s Environmental and Conservation Cluster. In 2022, Filantropi Indonesia’s Environmental and Conservation Cluster initiated the #AsikTanpaSampahPlastik (Great without Plastic Waste) movement. The series of activities in this #AsikTanpaSampahPlastik campaign consists of online activities like IG Live, Webinar, and Online Competitions, which will be held throughout February until the grand event on the World Environmental Day on 5 June 2022. The momentum of the National Waste Care Day (HPSN) on 21 February 2022 was chosen to open this movement through an IG Live with the theme of Self-Isolation is Completed, My Waste is Neglected or Isoman Usai, Sampahku Terbengkalai.
