Workshop on How to Write a Successful Grant Proposal, FMIPA UI
Depok - The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences of the University of Indonesia (FMIPA UI) held a workshop entitled "How to Write a Successful Grant Proposal" at the Pertamina Multidisciplinary Research Laboratory Building, in University of Indonesia on Tuesday 30 April 2019. FMIPA UI is determined to play an important role in producing high-quality human resources and researches with impact on future development. Quality human resources are believed to be the most critical requirement in succeeding for sustainable development in Indonesia.
FMIPA UI recently established the Institute for Applied Science (LST- Lembaga Sains Terapan) and the Institute for Sustainable Earth Resources (I-SER) as a center for managing collaborative research and human resources within and outside FMIPA UI. However, currently, LST and ISER do not yet have sufficient capability in designing quality proposals, especially for targeting international donors. For this reason, a proposal-making training event was held for institutions under the Special Work Unit of the LST (UKK-LST) FMIPA UI and I-SER FMIPA UI. This event was held with the aim so that participants can perfect and improve their ability in writing quality grant proposals to target international grant funding.
Speakers for the event were Dr. Chris Margules, Research Associate at the Research Center for Climate Change, University of Indonesia and Dr. Sri Mariati, Executive Director of Belantara Foundation.
Dr. Chris Margules's lecture was on How to Write a Successful Grant Proposal to International Donors. In Dr. Chris gave insights and knowledge on grants to the participants, including the types of grants, various sources of grants, and opinions on what donor organizations want. He also conveyed tips on writing grant proposals, budgets, and support letters that are valid for IAS and I-SER.
Dr. Sri Mariati was the next speaker with the theme Log Frame Development. Addressing the Project Cycle Management topic, Dr. Sri Mariati explained about the Logical Framework Approach (LFA) and its uses, the phases in LFA, the history of LFA, what problem analysis is, the logic in solving problems, considerations in determining objectives using the SMART method (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Time Bound), how to test objectives, indicators and verification tools, risks uses and assumptions, and etc.
At the end of the event, the workshop opened a discussion session where participants were welcomed to ask questions regarding proposals and convey ideas on developing proposals. The participants were very enthusiastic in participating in this workshop, as can be seen from the engaging discussions taking place at each session. As a follow up on this workshop we agreed to do a working group activity to deepen the skills in creating problem tree analyses and objective tree analyses, including creating its logical framework.
