International Day for Biological Diversity

Did you know that May 22nd we commemorate the International Biodiversity Day? Well, if you didn't let's get to know about it.
The International Day for Biological Diversity was first held on December 29th, 1993 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil when the UN Conference on Environment and the Earth Summit (UNCED/Earth Summit) was held and is under the United Nations (UN) agreement. In the 1993 UN Earth Summit, one of the important agreements produced was the Convention on Biological Diversity.
Because many countries had difficulties in planning and carrying out the International Day for Biodiversity on December 29th as it coincides with year-end holidays, on December 2000 the United Nations adopted May 22nd as the International Day for Biological Diversity, changing it from December 29th.
May 22nd was chosen as it coincided with the adoption of the final Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) on May 22, 1992, which was the last held meeting before the UNCED (3-14 June 1992) that resulted in the UN Convention on Biological Diversity.
Commemorated annually, International Day for Biological Diversity has a variety of environment and biodiversity themes to increase the understanding and awareness of the people all over the world.
Indonesia itself is known as a megadiversity country with a tropical climate and has varieties of diverse terrestrial and aquatic flora and fauna ecosystems living, growing and breeding inside it.
In the age of growing globalization, the number of biodiversity in Indonesia that are slowly experiencing extinction cannot be denied. Biodiversity has a vital role in the evolutionary process because when ecosystems can be maintained and are in balance, ecosystems will provide many benefits for the survival of our species.
In order not to be extinct, we must perform Biodiversity Conservation; a form of environmental protection by maintaining and protecting all ecosystems that are the habitat for flora and fauna.
As a form of concern for biological resources scattered throughout Indonesia, Belantara Foundation implements programs that support the recovery, protection, and conservation of endangered species (especially Sumatran tigers, Sumatran elephants, and Sumatran and Kalimantan Orangutans). With these programs, we hope to increase public awareness about the importance of biodiversity sustainability in Indonesia.
