Sustainable Management of Kerumutan Ecosystems Through the Recovery and Protection of Peatlands, Mangroves, and Community-Based Economic Improvement

The Kerumutan Consortium has carried out several activities in implementing the Sustainable Management of Kerumutan Ecosystems Program through the Recovery and Protection of Peatlands, Mangroves, and Community-Based Economic Improvement in the January–March 2019 period.

In supporting Social Forestry, mangrove management groups were formed in three villages: Igal Village, Bolak Raya Village, and Pulau Cawan Village. A draft for mangrove areas management plan for the three villages have also been composed and has received support from the village government and related agencies. 

For Community-Based Economic Improvement, we supported crab farming in two villages: Kuala Gaung Village and Terusan Kampas Village.  Here, we facilitated the community/fishermen by supplying rafts, baskets, and canoes to help increase their production.

Restoration activities, starting from determining the planting locations, nursery trainings, to the preparation and development of 60,000 local forest plant seedlings (areca nut species) carried out by women's groups in Kuala Gaung Village and Terusan Kempas Village are being underway.

Based on our field mentoring, a land clearing of 20 ha has been 100% completed, and as of March 2019, 10,000 areca nut seedlings have been planted in Kuala Gaung Village and Terusan Kempas Village.
