Sumatra Peatland restoration
Peatland for commynity

Belantara Foundation cooperates with the Wono Lestari Forest Farmer Groups or Kelompok Tani Hutan Wono Lestari to develop a peatland protection and restoration program in Jati Mulyo Village. This program began in June 2022. This program aims to protect and restore 93 hectares of degraded peatlands in the Community Forest in the area for the next two years. Through this project, we will plant at least 5 of multi-purposes tree species that will provide ecological benefits and economical benefits for the communities. This program is supported by One Tree Planted, Jejakin and APP Group.

The Sumatra Peatland Restoration program is located in a Community Forest (Hutan Kemasyarakatan/HKm). The HKm is a social forestry program established by Indonesia’s government with the objective of empowering local communities by granting them the rights to use protection-forest land and to practice sustainable forest management, thereby sustaining forest functions and the environment, and improving social well-being. In 2018, the Wono Lestari farmers group in Jati Mulyo Village obtained a license to manage the Community Forest in 2018 from the Indonesian Ministry of Forestry and Environment.

The project area is part of larger peatland hydrology system, the Keman River, that stores high amount of carbon. The area is vulnerable to peatland fires due to historical repeated fires, drier surface water, and peatland decomposition. Thus, this project will provide ecological and economic benefits to the communities at least for 30 years until the license expires.

MULTI-PURPOSED TREE SPECIES

Going forward, this program will restore degraded peatlands by planting multi-purposes trees species through an agroforestry method. We will combine native peatland plants that have protection functions as well as produce timber and fruit trees that can be harvested after a couple of years. On each hectare, we will plant 1,000 trees, consisting of at least 8 species per hectare, representing three forest layers (emergent, canopy, and underlayer).
